Penn Reading Project Panel Discussion of "Free Culture"
Lawrence Lessig’s book, 'Free Culture: The Nature and Future of Creativity', was the topic of the 16th annual Penn Reading Project panel discussion held on Sunday, September 3, 2006 at the University of Pennsylvania. Groups of first-year students and faculty leaders joined together to talk about the book as part of New Student Orientation for the Class of 2010. In 'Free Culture', Lessig, whom The New Yorker described as “the most important thinker on intellectual property in the internet era,” points out a fundamental irony: technology has given millions of citizens a voice, a platform, and unprecedented access to ideas – while at the same time, special interests and expanded copyright and patent laws have limited our opportunities to use it. Mr. Lessig, a 1983 graduate of UPenn, also holds degrees from Cambridge University and Yale, and is a professor at the Stanford Law School.
