19 Interviewing Your Information Source, 19 of 26
The 26 Ancestors Instructional modules teach you the 5-Step Research process you can use again and again to discover your family history. This segment, "Interviewing Your Information Source" (# 5.3), is part of Step 4, "Learn From the Source." This step brings you into direct contact with the source that might have the information you are seeking, in this case a person. The stories, details of events, and relationships in your ancestors' lives might only be discovered through an interview with someone who knew them or knew of them. The success of your interview will depend on many factors such as 1) what the person can remember, 2) how much he or she is willing to talk about, 3) how well you are prepared and organized, 4) how well you listen, 5) how sensitive you are to feelings and 6) how well you are able to draw out the information you are seeking. For more detailed information on preparing for and conducting an oral history interview watch "Capturing the Past" on RootsTelevision. To learn more about the importance of family stories, watch "Call of Story" on RootsTelevision.
