Update: Limb Infections and Amputations
Dr. Steven Benirschke, Professor of Orthoapedic Surgery and J.Debs Professor at Harborview Medical Center is considered a foremost authority on treating fractures of the heel bone (calcaneus). Fractures to this bone are the result of high-energy injuries, which can threaten function and limb-survival. Dr. Agnew from the Tampa Bay Orthopaedic Institute, Tampa Bay, Florida, who moderates this show, continues on with the question of using negative pressure wound care to minimize infection and soft tissue loss in mangled extremities. This show concludes with Dr. Doug Smith, Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports Medicine, HMC. Dr. Smith, who heads the Limb Viability service at Harborview Medical Center, presents the usually very complex decision making process involved when decisions have to made about amputating a mangled limb, or if attempts at limb salvage are in the greater interest of an affected patient.
