Sweet nothings
The price of cocoa is leaving an unusually sour taste in the mouth of the sweets industry. Its present cost of 2,600 euros per tonne is the highest for 30 years. What’s more, speculators on the commodity markets have been pushing up the price of sugar. Even though consumers have not lost their sweet teeth just yet, chocolate-makers here in Germany are having to rethink their strategy to halt sliding profits.
