New Orleans' Cemetery of America
End of Canal Street, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA. Neighborhood of Graveyards. From 'million apiece' monuments of snobbish Old Metairie to Holt on exactly opposite side of the spectrum with several others in the middle. Holt is rather "black" burying ground full of makeshift "headstones" .Materials incorporated to raise those range from cardboard, particle boards to concrete apparently made on the spot in buckets and then poured to desired shape with more or less of success. Decorations are as much an adventure but the most exotic are inscriptions often written with permanent markers on painted board cut with a jigsaw to the shape. Unrecorded pioneer of "jazz' Buddy Bolden found final rest here after three decades of incarceration in state mental asylum. The man could not handle the fruits that liberation from musical standards brought into his personal life. The movie also focuses on "a grave" apparently containing all personal effects of the deceased dumped, painted and fenced.
