World Music: Ziskakan, "Banjara"
(Réunion) Ziskakan is one of the most successful bands to come out of the tiny island of Reunion, off the east coast of Madagascar. The island’s population is a rich mix of African, European, Creole and Indian, and the music reflects this. The band is a true fusion of all of these influences, and "Banjara" sees bandleader Gilbert Pounia on location, paying homage to the proto-gypsies of Rajasthan. (While we usually think of Gypsies, or Roma, as being from Eastern Europe, they originated in India.) The song is catchy, the chord progressions are beautiful, and the icing on the cake is the delicious sound of 12 string guitar.Visit Six Degrees Records
