Fearsome horseback warriors spread the name of Hungary as far back as the 9th century. While those marauding days are now gone, Hungary has never given up their horse traditions. Featuring all aspects equestrian, the three-day National Gallop around Heroes Square in Budapest aims to restore those historic links. It including Hungarian mounted bowmen and the more famous and fearsome Hussar cavalry. Gallop organizer, Peter Geszti, sees the festival as a tourist attraction but also something that will forge a more modern Hungarian identity. [Peter Geszti, Gallop Organizer]: "I think reviving the Hungarian horsing traditions with the beauty of the Hussars is suitable to give Hungary a new cultural brand." Never mind it’s appeal to visitors. The Gallop is also hugely popular with Hungarians. Ninety towns and village, including nine participants from ethnic Hungarian regions in neighbouring countries, are competing in the race. And a crowd of 100000 will be cheering every trot, canter and gallop. Among them Jozsef Gombas, who like many others enjoy the cultural aspect of the gathering. [Jozsef Gombas, Visitor]: ''I particularly like it because it's independent of politics. Here everyone can feel Hungarian, they can like the past and present and find them fantastic.'' Next year's National Gallop will be a more European event. Organizers plan to hold an extra round for European capitals' racers to compare their skills with Hungarian riders. They hope that the community-building
