(CIT): Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) is a ubiquitous member of the ?-herpesvirus family. Although infection is usually asymptomatic in healthy children and adults, HCMV is the leading viral cause of birth defects and a major cause of morbidity and mortality in immunocompromised individuals.
