Partnering with Public Television Stations
This spring NYSERNet brought up an optical infrastructure from New York City to Buffalo, touching Abilene at both ends, with thirty-two dynamically provisionable waves, each capable of carrying 10 gigabits per second. Regular discussion between New York’s public television stations and NYSERNet staff and member institutions about possible use of the infrastructure led to a formal plan to use a statewide lambda as a station interconnect. We describe how early concern that the stations and NYSERNet might be competing for the same state resources led to a stronger, unified argument for support and strategic discussions that nurtured a 'what if' idea into the interconnect plan. We discuss the architecture of the interconnect, applications that the stations will run over this wave, and the impact of such an interconnect on the strategic planning of both the stations and NYSERNet. Still a rapidly developing work in progress, we will present the political, technical, financial, and programmatic challenges and opportunities in such a statewide partnership between NYSERNet and New York's nine PBS stations.
