PrimeTime Politics Danny Williams, the pugnacious and wildly popular premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, announced this morning that he will resign next week after seven years in office. He joins Peter Van Dusen from St. John’s to explain his decision to leave provincial politics – and why change was needed. Martin Stringer gets reaction to Williams’ announcement from two Newfoundlanders in Ottawa: Liberal MP Gerry Byrne and Conservative Senator Fabian Manning. Four MPs on the Commons national defence committee debate the Afghanistan mission and today’s opposition motion: Claude Bachand (Bloc Québécois), Jack Harris (NDP), Laurie Hawn (Conservative), and Bryon Wilfert (Liberal). Party strategists Greg MacEachern (Liberal), Kathleen Monk (NDP), and Bill Pristanski (Conservative) analyze the latest political developments on Parliament Hill and the Williams resignation. Also:On November 29th, voters in the federal riding of Winnipeg North elect a new MP to replace the NDP’s Judy Wasylycia-Leis, who left for an unsuccessful run at the Winnipeg mayor's office. The NDP are counting on Kevin Chief to hold the riding. Former Liberal MLA Kevin Lamoureux is running for the Liberals, and Julie Javier is the Conservative candidate. There are four other candidates in this by-election including, Jeff Coleman - the first Canadian to run under the European Pirate Party banner. Wasylycia-Leis won the riding with a plurality of 9,000 votes in 2008.
