In part one of our series "Classical Echoes" introducing "Echo" prize winners, we profile German conductor Kurt Masur, the recipient of this year’s lifetime achievement award. Masur led the Leipzig Gewandhaus orchestra and played a key role in the peaceful demonstrations of 1989 that ushered in the end of communist East Germany. He later conducted the New York Philharmonic.
