These videos were created by teens in MoMA’s The Art and Science of Conservation Program which ran from February to May 2009. For their final project, the students took a concept that they learned in the course and translated it into an everyday experience, synthesizing the information, activities and objectives. For example, one group compared the effect of varnish used on paintings to that of make-up on a person’s face — they both may be used to protect surfaces but, over time, will discolor and be disadvantageous. During the final weeks of the course, the students were instructed in the use of Apple’s imovie and worked in small groups to create 3 – 5 minute videos that combined interviews of conservators, gallery footage, voice-overs, creative skits, etc. These videos were presented on May 19, 2009 for the participants friends and family.
