Community gives the iconic boxes a new lease of life
Sue Carrington, "They’re never going to be used any more are they? No-one's going to use a telephone box, but they are part of history, that's something quite nice. I mean, why just put them on the scrap heap if they've got some kind of use, even if it's only picturesque value really." In 2002 there were 92,000 phone boxes in the UK. Now there's only half that. There are more than 70 million mobile phones across Britain, so aside from tourists seeking a souvenir snap, the booths are mostly idle. John Lumb runs the BT programme. He says the communities have given the iconic boxes a new lease of life.
