World Music: Terne Chave, "Aj Jaj Jaj"
(Czech Republic) There are Rom (gypsy) populations all throughout Europe, and the music in each locale is a fascinating blend of cultures. The Rom music of Central Europe is a hard swinging hybrid of the hot jazz of France and the rough and ready melodies of Romania and Eastern Europe. The music of Terne Chave mixes this and that gypsy "je ne sais quoi" into a sound they call "Rom n' Roll."Although Terne Chave means "young men" the band are not newcomers by any means, but rather a group that achieved success and recognition prior to the fall of communism on Czech Republic. During the economic unease that followed, racist skinhead groups targeted the band, and they decided to leave music until the waters were calmer, in 2000. Their rise since then has been steady, and this video certainly shows why; it’s hard to resist the beat and the unrelenting energy of all the players.Visit Terne Chave on Myspace
