Jane Brown changes her job
In this extract a woman who served in the Women’s Voluntary Service describes some of the work she and her friends did in an aircraft factory. During the First World War Britain had learnt how valuable women could be to the war effort. As soon as war broke out women were conscripted into the armed forces and into essential industries. As in the First World War, women took over the jobs of men serving in the forces. This activity included everything from window cleaning to driving buses. One area where women were used extensively was in aircraft production. The list of jobs described by the woman in this clip gives us an insight into the work done by women and how well they did it. This clip complements the film ‘Workers Weekend’.
