ACT TWO Scene 15 The same chamber as in the previous scene becomes visible, but the lighting now consists of multi-colored reflectors giving the space an enchanting atmosphere. Only Tsar Lazar is present. Suddenly a white dove flies to the small window, the tsar turns his head that way, and then a small explosion is heard, causing a smoke screen. After a short while, an elegant young man appears, dressed in a long white robe.   TSAR LAZAR: Is this a dream or reality, How is this possible: a dove changing into the body of a man, Or did I drink too much wine? THE VISION: Do not be afraid, dear tsar/ Heaven holds your prayer dear/ Before greeting you, I will visit no one on earth. The tsar stands up, crosses himself, walks to the apparition, falls on his knees and says: TSAR LAZAR: Oh, it is you, immortal ELIJAH/ Please forgive me/ For not recognizing you immediately. Oh, I have never thought otherwise, Then that I would truly behold you, Either on this earth or later. Heaven has heard my prayer. Thank you for the honor, almighty ELIJAH. The apparition takes the tsar by the hand, lifts it up and says with a clear, sonorous voice: THE VISION: Kneeling is humiliating, Even your servant you receive standing upright. Why do you smear the great heaven, By kneeling for me at such old age. Heaven cannot be reached kneeling, But by each thought that imbues the human being. True is that human being, Who distinguishes true thoughts from those that poison his spirit. You have not drunk too much wine, A sip or two does not cause an apparition.
