Food 04 - Central market outside - book seller - Phnom Penh, Cambodia
This is a brief moment of sadness that one experiences multiple times throughout the day in Cambodia. This one legged man (most likely a victim of one of Cambodia's many as-yet-undiscovered landmines) approaches us with a basked of photocopied books to sell. The Lonely Planet guidebook describes "beggar fatigue" as travelers' rapid callousing to Cambodia's severe problems. If you ignore them, you feel awful, but if you give to them you're not sure if they're really getting the money as there are actually coordinated beggar mafia networks where everything is pooled and redistributed. In fact we heard rumors of these mafia networks actually handicapping healthy people in order that they could beg more profitably. We learned to say "No, I'm sorry" in Cambodian and based on their reaction we gave or did not give. For example, many people become quite aggressive and nasty when you say no, but there are those rare few who simply smile and walk away. It was those people that we gave some money or food to.
