World Music: Deolinda, "Clandestino"
(Portugal) Deolinda’s previous video "Fado Toninho" was a jaunty affair; this outing is far more somber. To go with its nocturnal references, the video is shot in velvety darkness. "Clandestino" translates to "forbidden" and so shadows prevail throughout. Just as "Fado Toninho" was an excellent vehicle for showing off Ana Bacalao's brassier personna, "Clandestino" gives her the opportunity to demonstrate what she can do with a far more nuanced song. Her control and interpretation are spot on, and the arrangement gives the instrumentalists equal room to show off their mastery of themes and timbres. Purchase the Album.
