Paula Rego discussed her career with Fiona Bradley.05.12.2002 Paula Rego is acknowledged to be one of the leading figurative artists at work today. Drawing on literature, fairy tales, cartoons and myth, she creates strongly narrative works imbued with a sense of subversive mystery. A lifelong interest in surrealism has influenced the dreamlike and enigmatic atmosphere of her work and key motifs - dogs, young girls, claustrophobic family scenes - create a uniquely personal iconography charged with psychological tension.Paula Rego discussed her career with Fiona Bradley, curator of Rego’s major retrospective at Tate Liverpool and author of a new book, Paula Rego (Tate Publications 2002).Supported by Ricki and Robert Conway.
