美國國會參議院以99票對0票，無人反對的情況下，通過總統奧巴馬任命，美軍中央司令部司令彼德雷烏斯，出任阿富汗美軍及北約部隊司令，取代較早前，因為接受雜誌訪問時批評奧巴馬政府官員，而被奧巴馬免職的麥克里斯特爾。 彼德雷烏斯是麥克里斯特爾的上司，國會議員都相信，彼德雷烏斯上任後，有利執行奧巴馬政府的最新阿富汗政策。
