iReport — Around 20,000 anti-government Red Shirts blocked Bangkok’s 8-lane Ratchadamri Road on May 19th in spite of the usual requests not to cause a traffic blockage. Prayers were chanted for the 15 Red Shirts who lost their lives on the same date last year when the security forces moved in to clear their rally site after a 2-month occupation.This video covers events from 2pm to 5.30pm on a sweltering afternoon in the heart of Bangkok. Red paper birds are strung across open spaces, gruesome tableaus involving severed limbs are staged around the rally site, a death mannequin dangles from the famous Ratchaprasong sign, a young man holds up images of his mutilated head a year on from his violent attack, a young dog dressed in red totters on two legs, a young girl in mid hoola-hoop action graciously accepts food and cash, a bemused puppy pokes a slab of ice and a Skytrain glides silently above the stage offering its passengers a dramatic vista. By late afternoon the rainy season makes its mark on the proceedings as the many parasols become umbrellas and everybody stands for the national anthem.This rally came just five weeks after the commemoration of the deaths of 26 people near Democracy Monument on April 10th 2010. The total number of deaths during the unrest was 91, with one more in the north.With Thailand going to the polls on July 3rd this was also an occasion to look forward. Thaksin Shinawatra, former prime minister, now in exile in Dubai because of alleged corruption, has manoeuvred his younger sister, Yingluck, into heading the Pheu Thai Party. As their candidate for prime minister, she now carries the hopes of the Red Shirt movement.Prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva has said that a Pheu Thai victory would plunge Thailand into a political crisis because of Ms Yingluck’s plan to grant an amnesty which would enable Thaksin to return from exile.Noticeably absent from the rally was Red Shirt favourite, Jatuporn Prompan, owing to violating the terms of his bai...
