Victorian gunman David Rowntree has been captured by police in Whittlesea, 24 hours after his Melbourne crime-spree.  Whittlesea Police said Rowntree, 19, was caught without incident at 2.40pm (AEST) on Tuesday (22nd June 2010) by the dog squad in a residential part of the town of Whittlesea, north of Melbourne. Heavily armed police converged on Whittlesea after a sighting of Rowntree in the town around lunchtime. Schools and child care centres were made secure and a number of streets cordoned off as at least 14 police vehicles assembled at a recreation reserve on the edge of town. Rowntree had been on the run since a crime spree in Melbourne on Monday morning during which the sports precinct around the MCG was locked down for three hours after he was seen with a shotgun in the area. He had eluded a massive police manhunt after allegedly stealing two cars and committing three aggravated burglaries and an armed robbery. He gave police the slip after a high-speed chase along the Monash Freeway and was later seen brandishing a shotgun near the MCG. Rowntree was arrested in a paddock at the end of Roslyn Way in Whittlesea and will be interviewed by detectives from the Armed Crime Task Force. Rowntree, from Colac, was released on parole in March, 12 months into a three year sentence in a Youth Justice Centre for burning down a house to cover his fingerprints after burgling the property. Premier John Brumby said the youth parole board had made a mistake in releasing the teen who was described last year by a judge as being ``devious'' and ``out of control.'' ``They took the view that he was ready for release and they let him out after 12 months, obviously the judgment, I think, was misplaced and he’s reoffended,'' Mr Brumby told Fairfax Radio. ``The person concerned is dangerous, police have got a very large contingent out looking for him and they obviously hope to apprehend him at the earliest opportunity.''
