Australian Parliament Question Time
Prime Minister Julia Gillard answered questions from members of her party and the opposition on a number of issues. Members questions were focused on the government’s plan for a carbon tax aimed to cut greenhouse gas emission, and on a recent deal between Australia and Malaysia concerning asylum seekers. Under the agreement, Australia will send 800 asylum-seekers to Malaysia as they arrive in Australian waters and are picked up by Coast Guard and Navy, in exchange for 4,000 refugees who have already been processed in Malaysia.
