Celje (German Cilli, Latin Celeia), with about 50 039 inhabitants (2010), the fourth largest city in Slovenia. It covers an area of 24 km ². Celje is also one of the eleven municipalities of the country (see Subdivisions). The city of Celje is situated on the Savinja (Sann) in the southeastern part of the Celje basin - about 70 km northeast of the capital Ljubljana (Ljubljana). It is the economic center of the region and a junction between Ljubljana in the West, Maribor (Maribor) in the north, Zidani Most (Steinbrück) in the south, Velenje (Wöllaner) and Slovenj Gradec (Windischgratz) in the northwest and Rogaška Slatina (Rohitsch -Sauerbrunn) in the east.
