A former politician from what was West Germany has launched a career in eastern Germany.  Lothar Späth, the grand old man of Germany’s conservative Christian Democratic Union, the CDU, was long the state premier of Baden-Württemberg until scandals cost him his office.In the early 1990s, he went east and success was his again as manager of the formerly state-run optical equipment company Jenaoptik. The proverbially clever man put the company back on its feet. In Thüringen, he’s celebrated as an “Architect of Unification”.
