JACKSONVILLE, Fla. --- At both the republican and democratic headquarters on the Westside, supporters tell us they’re getting complaints about people stealing their signs. Both parties say every single day, people come in complaining that one or more of their signs have been stolen. “We’ll have at least 6 or 8 times a day people will come in and say they’re aggravated somebody’s stole More.. their signs or tore them up…mainly just taken them”, says Betty Griffey. She’s one of the volunteers at the republican headquarters on the Westside. “It’s frustrating because these signs cost…We give them signs and then they have to come back and get another sign.” Republican signs aren’t the only being stolen. Democratic signs for the Obama/Biden ticket are also hot items. “Unfortunately there are unscrupulous people out there who don’t enjoy freedom of speech on your front yard”, says Nick Nyhan. He is a volunteer at the democratic headquarters on the Westside. “We have people coming in everyday for a sign, and everyday someone‘s coming in for a replacement.” Larry Briscoe lives off Ricker Road and had his political sign stolen 3 times. After the 3rd, he set up his camcorder to try and catch the thieves. When he watched the video later, he was shocked at what he saw. “I got ‘em this time…I pictures and video of us doing it…I kinda get a chuckle out of it, I see younger kids coming up and tearing them up.” Briscoe has since put another sign on his lawn…it shows still pictures of the two suspects and has the words “Warning Video Surveillance”. If caught stealing signs, the suspects could face a slew of misdemeanors. They include vandalism, criminal mischief or trespassing. Less..
