Circle of Excellence: Eric F. Wieschaus
Nobel Laureate Professor Wieschaus is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and member of the National Academy of Sciences, and a co-recipient of the Nobel Prize for Medicine (1995). Working with Christiane Nuesslein-Volhard of the Max-Planck Institute for Developmental Biology in Tuebingen, Germany, who shared the 1995 Nobel Prize, he studied thousands of fruit flies to identify specific genes that determine a fly’s body shape and organ arrangement. With Nobel co-recipient Edward B. Lewis of the California Institute of Technology, Wieschaus helped to spawn worldwide efforts to discover the genetic master plan for all life forms, including humans.
