Scrums Conservative senator Nancy Ruth’s controversial comments dominated the day’s scrums. The senator made the remarks during a Parliament Hill meeting of women’s rights groups that she sponsored. Ruth told groups who were criticizing the Harper policy of not funding abortion to "shut the f--- up", or face backlash from the government. Liberal Foreign Affairs critic Bob Rae, Liberal critic Anita Neville (status of women), NDP leader Jack Layton, and Bloc Québécois leader Gilles Duceppe spoke to reporters about the senator’s comments. Rae, Layton and Duceppe also discussed proposed changes to the federal lobbying act and the long-gun registry.
