Global 3000 Azerbaijan
The lack of water is driving people away from their villages in many places around the world. That’s also true for Nakhchivan,on of Azerbaijan's driest regions. But there was always enough water here underground. Early peoples had a system for getting at it. They built tunnel systems, called Kahriz. But oil wealth brought pipes and electric pumps. The Kahriz were not needed anymore and left to rot. But after independence from Moscow the money needed to keep the water systems running ran dry. Now people are turning to the old traditions. The Kankans, the people who used to build the water systems of the past, are teaching a new generation. And now water is beginning to flow again.
