Mad Men show renewal up in the air
Life imitates art as drama over advertising hits the advertising drama, Mad Men. American Movie Classics is responding to a report that negotiations with Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner for fifth and sixth seasons of the drama could "collapse" over demands the network is said to be resisting. Deadline.com reported that AMC and studio Lionsgate have asked for product placement, reducing or eliminating two regular cast members and shaving two minutes off the show’s running time to fit in more commercials. This is part of an agreement to pay Weiner a rich $30 million paycheck over two years. But AMC assures that plans are proceeding for the next season. In a statement from the network they said, "AMC has officially authorized production of season 5 of Mad Men, triggering our option with Lionsgate. While we are getting a later start than in years past due to ongoing, key non-cast negotiations, Mad Men will be back for a fifth season in early 2012." Lions Gate shares are up over 0.5% at $6.12.
