Video — Glory
Service for May 29, 2011, Glory, by Rev. Gary Kowalski. Maybe you’ve seen the 1989 film by that title, about Robert Gould Shaw and the Massachusetts 54th, the all-black regiment whose assault on Fort Wagner in the Civil War was a battlefield defeat but a moral victory. Maybe you even knew that Shaw was a prominent Unitarian. This morning--in honor of the 150th anniversary of the onset of that war and in observance of Memorial Day, which began as a tribute to its fallen troops--Gary looks at both Shaw and Thomas Wentworth Higginson, another of the Union (and Unitarian) officers whose African American soldiers helped turn the tide of the conflict.
