Season 9, Episode 3
PrimeTime Politics Weekend This week, join Martin Stringer and his journalist guests: Louise Elliott, parliamentary reporter for CBC Radio, and John Geddes, Ottawa bureau chief for Maclean’s magazine. They’ll discuss:1.The Human Smuggling Bill:The Harper government this week introduced a bill which imposes stiff penalties on those who smuggle people to Canada’s shores, and restricts the freedoms of those who arrive by illegal means. How does the bill balance the need to act against those who exploit human suffering with the need for a fair and open refugee system? 2. The Economy:The Liberals launched a counter-attack against Finance Minister Jim Flaherty this week, touting their economic policies as more compassionate and responsive to the needs of ordinary Canadians. Also, Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney released a report showing Canada’s economy grew more slowly in the last quarter than since the end of the recession – and predicting slow growth over the next few years. How is the economy playing out in the political arena? 3. The Politics of Potash:Premier Brad Wall of Saskatchewan has asked Ottawa to block a $40 billion takeover bid of Saskatchewan’s Potash Corporation by Anglo-Australian mining giant BHP BIlliton. It would be the largest takeover of a resource company in Canadian history. Investment Canada now must evaluate the bid according to its rule of "net benefit" to Canada. The opposition parties in Ottawa have joined Premier Wall in calling for the federal government to reject the bid. How's this all playing out politically? Also, Martin speaks with International Trade Minister Peter Van Loan about negotiations aimed at a free trade agreement between Canada and the European Union.
