World Music: Forro in the Dark with David Byrne, "Asa Branca"
-Download on iTunes-Buy the album(Brazil) While "Asa Branca" is practically the 2nd national anthem of Brazil, it has an extremely specific local origin, namely from the northern province of Pernambuco. The rhythm is called forro (pronounced FO-Hoh) and until Luis Gonzaga came down out of the hills to play on the streets of Rio De Janeiro in 1940, it was demeaned as "hillbilly" music. But it’s great stuff for dancing, particularly the more upbeat numbers. "Forro in the Dark" is made up mostly of Brazilians now living in New York, and in this outing, they have the formidable Talking Head himself, David Byrne on lead vocals. With his well-known fondness for forro, Byrne must have gotten a kick out of singing this classic.
