Het kinderboekenbal is de traditionele opening van de kinderboekenweek. Het thema heeft dit jaar alles te maken met tekenen en beeldtaal in kinderboeken. In het Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ in Amsterdam werd tevens de Gouden Griffel uitgereikt aan Daan Remmerts de Vries en Philip Hopman voor het beste kinderboek van afgelopen jaar: Voordat jij er was.
