ウガンダは人口の８割がいまだに電気のない生活をしていて、夜に使うろうそくが原因の火災も後を絶ちません。三洋電機は新興国向けに開発したソーラーランタンをウガンダで普及させようとしていました。安全な光に関心は高いものの、価格が普及の障害となっていました。しかし政府が太陽光発電に補助金を出すことが決まり、ランタンの値段が大幅に下がることになりました。
