School program expands to accommodate consistent growth
The English as a Second Language program has outgrown its current location at Hillcrest Elementary School. For the 2005-2006 school year, the Lawrence Public School District, U.S.D. 497, received a $150,000 Comprehensive School Reform Grant from the Kansas State Department of Education. With the money, the district will expand the ESL program to a second location at Cordley Elementary School for next school year. However, the ESL program is only a part of the grant funding. "The grant is promoting that we set up interventions in reading and math for all children. The ESL program is another component that we've added into it," Kim Young, federal programs and international students specialist, said.
