Betty (Renee Zellweger) is a diner waitress married to Del (Aaron Eckhart), an abusive low-lifer.  When Del meets his fate, Betty decides to take her life into her own hands and tracks down the producer of her favorite soap opera; she wants to be one of the characters in the drama, not play the character.
