Desertification and informal construction: Egypt’s wounds
According to the UN, 6 million hectares of arable land dissapear every year because of desertification, a loss equivalent to an estimated 42 billion dollars. In Egypt, a mere 3% of the country’s surface area is fit for agriculture. Drought, higher levels of salt in the aquifer and the soil, bad farmland drainage and construction on farmlands make up 30% of the total desertification.
