the audit found serious flaws that allowed greg solano to steal items for personal profit. for specifics, let’s go to jeremy jojola live in the newsroom. jeremy. former sheriff greg solano admited to stealing items like handcuffs and bullet proof vests to sell on ebay.. he's currently charged with more than 250 counts of embezzlement. today a special state audit revealed he took in quite a bit of cash selling police items out of his department's supply room. the exact amount, according to the audit: 73,364 dollars. the audit also said major holes in the department allowed this to happen.... like no sign-in forms for supply and evidence rooms... people just walked in and out.. for santa fe county, they say they are already fixing some problems and welcome the audits findings. "obviously this was a serious breach of trust in the commission and county staff, and the county sheriff's department had really trusted sheriff' solano. i think it was really dissapointing for everyoene and i think this audit helps bring some closure to some isssues that were laying out there, as to how a lot of things occured." the audit also found flaws in the department evidence room... like a huge backlog of evidence needing to be logged and filed.. no scale to weigh drugs coming into evidence.. and in some cases, property from the room was released without the right paper work. as for greg solano..his case is still moving along... it's set for trial later this summer.... but we've been told a plea deal could be in the works.
