Yasmin Ratansi
Beyond Politics Liberal MP Yasmin Ratansi was born in Tanzania and lived in England before emigrating to Canada in 1974. When officials refused to acknowledge Yasmin’s qualifications, she pursued a degree in accounting and earned a CGA. In 1979, Ratansi joined the Liberal Party and was a member of the riding executive when John Turner approached her in 1988 to run in Don Valley East. Ratansi didn't win, losing to Conservative Alan Redway, but she kept active in politics, serving with the party's provincial wing and also co-chairing Mel Lastman's campaign for mayor of Toronto. After David Collenette retired in 2004, Ratansi ran for the Liberals under Paul Martin and won — becoming the first Muslim woman to sit as an MP. Described by her colleagues as a triple "A" personality, Yasmin finds time to meditate every morning and loves to zumba, a dance fitness program. Yasmin Ratansi talks to Catherine Clark about her life "Beyond Politics".
