12:58pm UK, Monday September 08, 2008 Sky News has obtained footage of the aftermath of a US attack on an Afghan village that has persuaded authorities to reinvestigate claims that 90 civilians were killed there.   A police officer looks at a house destroyed in the air strike on Shindand The US-led coalition has previously rejected the civilian tolls from the August 22 strikes on the we More..stern village of Azizabad, in Shindand district, saying only five to seven civilians had been killed, along with 30 to 35 Taliban fighters. But US General David McKiernan has said in a statement that there is "emerging evidence" about the incident. He said: "I feel it is prudent to request that US Central Command send a general officer to review the US investigation and its findings with respect to the new evidence." Gen McKiernan heads the Nato-led International Security Assistance Force and is the most senior US commander in Afghanistan. If the toll of 90 is confirmed, it would be one of the deadliest such incidents since the US-led coalition invaded Afghanistan seven years ago to remove the Taliban from government. The Afghan government says the video footage backs up its claim of more than 90 dead. A Western official said the mobile telephone footage shows children among the dead lined up in a mosque before they were buried. The official, speaking anonymously, said: "The video clearly shows 40 to 50 people under shrouds with at least 11 to 12 children with their heads blown off and their faces melted." Sky foreign affairs editor Tim Marshall said: "Civilian deaths from US and Nato action have almost tripled since 2006. "That’s partly because there is so much action going on but it also seems to be partly because they are not getting the intelligence right or they are simply not trying hard enough when they are in action in areas where civilians are.
