Music Makes Everything Child’s Play
There is a nursery school in Berlin that’s like no other in Europe. Daniel Barenboim – the General Music Director of the Deutsche Staatsoper in Berlin had the idea of surrounding young children with musical instruments. Occasionally, the children are visited by a musician. The members of the chorus sing with the children and the orchestra members explain to the children their instruments. Some people say that music makes children more intelligent. Many parents believe this and value a musical education for their children. But is it true that music really makes you smarter? Not really, says Instrument Education Researcher Andreas Doerne who is the scientific advisor to the music kindergarten. Nevertheless, it is worth the effort to get children interested in music early on, he says. Doerne adds that music can do more than people think, because by working with the phenomenon of sound, the children can grasp some laws of physics, or mathematic principles simply as they are singing songs.
