Indian tribes had populated America for centuries before the Corps of Discovery began their journey. As diverse as the land around them, these tribes thrived with highly developed social structures and cultures. In the region of the newly acquired Louisiana Territory, one of the most powerful and highly developed was the Osage nation. The Osage controlled nearly 100,000 square miles of territory over parts of what is today Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas. They had extensive trading networks, and the furs and skins they hunted, prepared, and traded were sent all over the world.
