Aoraki / Mt Cook
Aoraki / Mount Cook is New Zealand’s highest mountain, situated on the country's South Island. It is part of the Southern Alps which stretches form the South to the North. It is one of only two mountain ranges in the world going from south to north, instead of west to east. Aoraki is the Maori name of the mountain, and Mount Cook is the name that Captain John Lort Stokes gave the mountain, in honor of Captain James Cook. In this video, I show you Mt Cook from Lake Tekapo. Lake Tekapo gets fed form the Southern Alps. The lake is now part of Waikato Valley hydro system. Hydroelectric power accounts for 57% of the total electricity generation in New Zealand. On the shore of Lake Tekapo, lies the Church of the Good Shepherd, built in 1935. The spot is a holy spot for the Maori, and not a single rock or bush could be removed when the church was built. The rocks for the church was sourced within a 5 mile radius of the spot, and all of them had to be unchipped and in their natural condition. Camera: Canon 550D Music: Norah Jones - "Not my Friend"
