Set in a prisoner-of-war camp during World War II, this drama from director Nagisa Ôshima examines the unlikely relationship between British prisoner Maj. Celliers (David Bowie) and the camp’s Japanese commandant Capt. Yonoi (Ryuichi Sakamoto). As Yonoi develops an obsession with Celliers, Allied captive Col. Lawrence (Tom Conti) works with chief guard Sgt. Hara (Takeshi "Beat" Kitano) to protect the POWs from rape and other abuses.
