Made in Germany Malaysia — Change through High-Tech
For Lurgi, it is the biggest breakthrough in Asia. Malaysia’s state oil company Petronas has signed a contract with the Frankfurt company, which builds chemical plants. Petronas is building a 500 million dollar factory to produce methanol, which has replaced lead as an anti-knock additive to gasoline. In the region around Saba, Petronas has plenty of natural gas, the source of methanol, and it expects to do good business. It costs 100 euros to produce a ton of methanol in Malaysia, which is then sold for 350 euros in Europe. But to reach that point, Uwe Zwiefelhofer has a lot of work to do. Lurgi's Southeast Asia manager won the contract and is now responsible for constructing the facility. Karl Harenbrock accompanied him at the construction site on the island of Saba.
