Sébastien Togneri, an aide to Natural Resources Minister Christian Paradis, resigned last night over his interference in access to information requests. Liberal justice critic Marlene Jennings, Bloc Québécois House leader Pierre Paquette, and NDP MP Claude Gravelle spoke to reporters about Togneri’s resignation. The opposition MPs all called for Paradis’ resignation, citing the principle of ministerial responsibility for the actions of staff.Togneri had twice testified in May 2010 before a House of Commons committee that was investigating allegations of political interference in access to information requests. The Conservatives announced shortly after Togneri’s appearances that ministerial staffers would no longer be allowed to testify at parliamentary committees and emphasized the issue of ministerial accountability.
