Classic USA Road Trips - Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad
Follow in the footsteps of brave and resourceful former slave, Harriet Tubman, and her fellow abolitionists who led more than 70 enslaved African Americans to freedom before the American Civil War along Maryland’s Underground Railroad, which was not a true railroad but rather a secret network of roads, waterways and hiding places. Born an enslaved woman in Dorchester County, Maryland around 1821, Tubman fled to the North in 1849. She returned many times to lead others to freedom, with great danger to all involved, earning her the name “Moses of Her People.” This byway brings to life the stories along the Underground Railroad on Maryland’s eastern shore, along with stunning scenery and great seafood.
