The lyrics of this seductive song are some of the earliest known in the form, but the setting is unexpectedly contemporary, the product of two musicians who have been exposed to a wealth of musical influences. Kiran Ahluwalia (who composed the music) and her husband Rez Abbasi (who arranged it) have created a successful hybrid of eclectic sounds…electric guitar sits alongside the harmonium, and north African drum patterns co-exist with the tablas. The video itself is straightforward performance, with the exception of Kiran, who addresses the camera directly, as a lover. It’s sexy stuff.
