Middleware, Music Delivery, and the Future of Access to Content
In the fall of 2003, Penn State and Napster LLC entered into an agreement to establish a pilot program for the delivery of music to students. The success of the pilot rests on a strong technical foundation involving effective use of networks, caches and middleware, and in particular, Shibboleth played a key role in enabling a smooth registration process for students. This innovative program is an example of how higher education has responded to the larger issues around peer-to-peer file sharing on campuses. The program has captured the attention of many campuses across the country, and recently the University of Rochester signed a similar agreement with Napster. Panelists include representatives from Penn State, the University of Rochester, and Napster, talking about the origins and driving principles for the program as well as the issues it has raised about what this means for the future of access to content on campuses.
